Kayaks moving slowly along a calm river lined with mangroves in the north of Phu Quoc

Island days

North or south, by road

Two easy private days with a car and a guide, one to each end of the island. The north day is about water: a calm river kayak and a beach full of starfish. The south day is about history: a wartime prison camp, a pagoda above the sea and a white-sand beach.

The north: river, mangroves and starfish

The day heads up the north-west coast by road. The main event is a kayak on the Cua Can river, where the water is calm and the banks are lined with mangroves and fishing boats. You paddle at your own pace with life jackets on; nobody needs to have kayaked before. That paddling is why the day is 1.5 rather than 1 on our scale.

After the river comes Rach Vem, known as Starfish beach for the starfish in its shallow water. The rule there is simple: look, photograph, but never lift a starfish out of the water. Lunch is included, and you are back at your hotel around 15:00.

Kayaking runs all year in calm weather. Rain may shorten the paddle, and the guide decides on the day.

The south: a prison, a pagoda and a beach

The south day starts at Phu Quoc Prison, the wartime prison camp that is now a museum. It is the most serious stop of any tour on this site. Some of the reconstructions are graphic, and parents should think about whether younger children should see them. Tell us the children's ages when you ask, and the guide plans the visit with that in mind.

From there the road crosses to Ho Quoc Pagoda on the east coast, where shoulders and knees must be covered. After lunch the day ends at Sao Beach, with white sand and time to swim. Entrance fees are included. The day runs all year.

One, the other, or both

  • Travelling with young children: the north. The kayak and the starfish hold their attention, and there is nothing difficult to explain.
  • Interested in the island's history: the south. The prison museum is the reason to go.
  • A rest day between two forest treks: either. Both are easy.
  • Four or more days on the island: both, on different days.

Either day sits well between two forest days, as a rest for the legs. For suggestions over two, three or four days, see combining day trips.

Pick-up, timing and what to bring

Both days start with a hotel pick-up, included in Duong Dong, Ong Lang and Bai Truong (Long Beach). Hotels in the south around An Thoi and in the far north carry a supplement, quoted with the price. The north day runs from about 08:00 to about 15:00, which leaves the late afternoon free. The south day runs from about 08:30 to about 16:00. Exact times are in your confirmation.

On both days bring swimwear, a towel, a hat and sunscreen. On the north day expect to get wet from the knees down in the kayak and at Starfish beach, so sandals that stay on in water are more use than trainers. On the south day carry a layer that covers shoulders and knees for the pagoda, and something to change into after Sao Beach if you plan a long swim.

Who these days do not suit

  • Anyone after a hard workout. Neither day is more than 1.5 of 5. For effort, see the forest treks.
  • Families not ready for graphic history. Skip the prison museum, or choose the north.
  • Visitors unwilling to cover shoulders and knees. The pagoda requires it.
  • Anyone who wants open-sea snorkelling. That is on the sea and islands days.

How to book

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Do I need kayaking experience for the north day?

No. The Cua Can river is calm water, life jackets are provided and you paddle at your own pace.

Is the prison museum suitable for children?

Some reconstructions are graphic. Parents should decide in advance, and tell us the children's ages so the guide can plan the visit.

What should I wear for the south day?

Something light that covers shoulders and knees for Ho Quoc Pagoda, and swimwear for Sao Beach.

Can we do both days?

Yes, on different days. Send one request with both dates and we quote them together.
