An Thoi by canoe: the snorkelling day
You are driven south to An Thoi harbour and board a canoe, which on Phu Quoc means a speedboat, with a captain and a guide. The boat visits three islands of the An Thoi archipelago. Which three is decided on the day by the sea, because the sheltered side changes with the wind. You snorkel on coral with masks and life jackets provided, spend time on a beach, and have lunch either on an island or on board; that detail is confirmed in your quote.
This is the cheapest day on the site and the one where the sea matters most. A speedboat in a chop is not gentle, so anyone prone to seasickness should think about Hon Thom instead, where much of the crossing is by cable car.
Hon Thom: the cable car day
The day starts with the same drive south to An Thoi, then the long sea cable car to Hon Thom island. It is high over the water, which is the point for most people and the problem for a few. After beach time on Hon Thom, a canoe takes you to one or two nearby islands to snorkel when the sea allows, then lunch and the return.
The cable car return ticket is included in the quote. The water park on Hon Thom is not part of this day; it is a separate ticket that we do not sell. The cable car can stop in strong wind, and when it does, the day is reshaped or refunded.
The sunset camp: the evening day
Our guides set up a camp on a quiet beach on the west coast, the sunset side: shade tents, mats, swimming, games, a BBQ dinner and a small campfire where it is permitted. Soft drinks and water are included; beer is on request at cost. It is not an overnight camp. You are back at your hotel by about 21:00, because everything we sell is a day trip. Wind or rain can move the camp to another beach, which is confirmed in your quote.
The camp starts in the afternoon, so it fits a day when you want the morning free, or the evening after a short morning elsewhere. It is not a good partner for a long forest day; you would arrive tired.
When the sea says no
Sea trips on the west and south coasts are cancelled when the sea is unsafe. When that happens you choose a full refund or another day. We do not publish a list of the calmest months: the boat partner sees the sea every day, and the likely conditions for your date are confirmed with them before we quote. In the rainy season, roughly June to October or November, showers are likely at the beach camp, and the same refund rule applies. More on seasons on the when to go page.
Do not stand on or touch coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen. Coral that is stepped on does not grow back in a season.
Who should skip the sea days
- People prone to seasickness on the canoe days, especially An Thoi.
- Non-swimmers who will not wear a life jacket. Life jackets are provided on the canoe.
- Anyone with a strong fear of heights on the Hon Thom day.
- Travellers wanting the water park. It is not part of the Hon Thom day.
- Anyone who wants to sleep on the beach. The camp ends at about 21:00.
If you want a day near the water without a boat, the island days include a calm river kayak and a swim at Sao Beach. For a stream swim in the forest, see the Suoi May stream day.
Doing more than one
An Thoi by canoe and Hon Thom both leave from An Thoi harbour and both include island snorkelling, so most people choose one of the two: the canoe for more time on the water, Hon Thom for the cable car. The sunset camp sits well with either on a different day. Combining day trips has suggestions for two, three and four days on the island.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
What happens if the sea is too rough?
The trip is cancelled and you choose a full refund or another day. On the canoe days, which islands you visit is decided on the day by sea conditions.
Is the Hon Thom water park included?
No. The cable car return ticket is included, but the water park is a separate ticket that we do not sell.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel?
No, but you should be comfortable in the water. On the canoe day, life jackets and masks are provided.
Is the sunset camp overnight?
No. It runs from about 15:00 to 21:00 and you are back at your hotel by about 21:00.
